Why I want to serve
During the past two years on the Board of Directors, Hopson has worked collaboratively with fellow Board members to strengthen the Association's governance, modernize operations, and position the organization for the future. He believes the Association faces a critical challenge: transitioning from a membership base dominated by Vietnam veterans to one that actively engages Marines from newer generations while preserving the proud traditions of the Battalion.
Hopson is committed to expanding programs that directly benefit members, including scholarships, emergency financial assistance, disaster relief, bereavement support, and other services that exemplify the enduring bond shared by 1/9 Marines. He has been actively involved in initiatives to improve governance, leverage technology, expand membership, and establish local chapters across the country. He seeks another term to continue this important work, ensuring the Association remains strong, relevant, and dedicated to serving its members while preserving the proud legacy of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines—The Walking Dead.
Work Experience
After graduating from high school, Hopson enlisted in the United States Navy and completed Hospital Corpsman training at Great Lakes Naval Station. He later joined the Fleet Marine Force and was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. During the Vietnam War, he participated in combat operations from Deckhouse V through Operation Prairie IV and later served with the 3rd Med Battalion, Phu Bai, Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Hopson subsequently built a distinguished 42-year career in the insurance and financial services industry. Beginning as a branch manager in consumer finance and later joining Allstate Insurance, he advanced through numerous sales management, leadership, and compliance positions. Throughout his career he completed advanced professional development at Purdue University, Bryn Mawr College, Lake Erie College, and the Arthur Andersen Training Center. He concluded his career as a State Compliance Officer, directing regulatory compliance and supervisory oversight for more than 250 Registered Representatives.
Personal
Hubert "Doc" Hopson is a highly decorated United States Navy veteran whose life has been defined by service, leadership, and integrity. Following his military service, he devoted more than four decades to the insurance and financial services industry before retiring in 2012. He has been married and is the proud father of five children and grandfather of eleven grandchildren. Doc has been a Lifetime Member of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines Association since 1989 and remains deeply committed to preserving the legacy of "The Walking Dead" while ensuring its future relevance for generations to come.
