Why I want to serve
I was not a member of 1/9, and I would never pretend to speak for those who carried that battalion’s name. I was asked to serve because I understand the bond Marines have with their units and because I bring skills that can help the Association carry its mission forward.
The Association has an opportunity to preserve the stories of earlier generations while building stronger connections with post-9/11 Marines and their families. Technology can help, but only when it strengthens the brotherhood instead of replacing it. Better digital systems, engaging multimedia, well-run reunions, and consistent communication can help more Marines find the Association, participate in its programs, and remain connected.
My priorities would be to strengthen the Association’s technology and cybersecurity practices, support the planning and promotion of reunions and other events, expand its multimedia and storytelling capabilities, and help create meaningful ways for younger Marines to become active members and future leaders.
I bring technical ability, creativity, event experience, and a willingness to work. More importantly, I understand that this board exists to serve Marines, Corpsmen, and their families. I would be honored to contribute where I’m needed, listen to those who built the Association, and help ensure the legacy of The Walking Dead remains strong for the generations that follow.
Work Experience
Kyle brings more than 20 years of combined experience in military communications, cybersecurity, technology, multimedia production, and program leadership. He has supported Navy, Marine Corps, and classified networks and has held cybersecurity leadership roles with global organizations including Sony, Illumina, HP Enterprise, Symantec Federal Consulting, and Information Security Media Group.
Throughout his career, Kyle has led cross-functional teams, developed digital platforms, managed live events and executive programs, produced multimedia content, and created large-scale cybersecurity exercises. His experience includes strategic communications, event planning, nonprofit development, technology management, cybersecurity risk, sponsorship engagement, and translating complicated ideas into experiences that connect with people.
Personal
Kyle Schmechel served with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines from 2005 to 2007 before joining the Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, where he served from 2007 until leaving the Marine Corps as a Sergeant in 2009. His Marine Corps experience in tactical communications and technology became the foundation for a career in cybersecurity, organizational leadership, and veteran entrepreneurship.
Kyle lives in Virginia and is the co-founder and Cyber Solutions Architect of The Cyber Space, a veteran-founded and woman-owned cybersecurity company that creates immersive training, crisis simulations, and live events.
