Woody Postle
What can be said of Woody Postle? Quite a lot, and all of it leaves an indelible mark on everyone who had the honor of knowing him. Woody was a rare breed and a very special Marine whose legacy of dedication, kindness, and strength will never be forgotten.
Woody’s service during the Vietnam War is best described by a fellow Marine who served alongside him: “Woody was an all-around wonderful guy. I first met him as fellow Marines in Vietnam. He was tough, dedicated, and fierce in combat. But he also had a heart of gold and would do anything for his fellow Marines.”
Those qualities he displayed during his service — toughness, dedication, and a golden-hearted commitment to others — were not left behind on the battlefield. Woody carried them with him into his civilian life, defining every role he took on.
After returning from Vietnam, Woody met and married his beloved wife, Gail. Together, they raised two wonderful sons and built a life founded on love, resilience, and integrity. His civilian career spanned 42 years with the United States Postal Service, where he exemplified the same principles of commitment and excellence that guided him as a Marine.
Upon retiring, Woody dedicated his life to serving veterans and related organizations. His dedication to the 1/9 Walking Dead was especially noteworthy. He served with distinction in leadership roles, including Vice President, President, and Chairman of the Board. He earned respect for his compassionate leadership, his unwavering dedication to his fellow veterans, and his tireless efforts to improve the organization’s operations, always promoting and displaying the spirit of Semper Fidelis.
Woody never sought recognition. His humility was as much a part of his character as his fierce loyalty and deep compassion. You would rarely see Woody without wearing something that reflected his pride in being a Marine. As General Norman Schwarzkopf once said, “It’s nice to feel you have a purpose.” Woody always carried himself with that sense of purpose, whatever he was doing.
Today, it is our profound honor to offer the Target Scholarship in the name of Woodrow “Woody” W. Postle, Jr. This scholarship represents Woody’s unwavering commitment to his fellow Marines, his community, and the ideals he held dear. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the power of dedication, courage, and heart.
Semper Fidelis, Woody. Your memory lives on.
